FAQ

What is a Game Jam?

A game jam is an event where people come together and create a video game in a short period of time. Participants rapidly prototype game designs and inject new ideas to help inspire and grow the global game industry. The brief time span is meant to help encourage creative thinking which results in small but innovative and experimental games, some of which have been developed beyond game jams into a commercial success.

What's the deal with in person vs online?

For this jam, each participant has the opportunity to either jam with us in person at the GDC on UT campus, or go completely online via discord! We do ask that you please clarify for team matching.

Is this game jam a competition?

Not necessarily. There will be voluntary judges that will give certain games awards, but the main goal of the Jam is to have fun, meet new people and make games!

Do I need to come to the event with a team already formed?

There is no need to come to the jam with a team. You can declare a team or find people to work with in the jam Discord server. We encourage you to make new friends and meet new people!

Do I need special skills/experience to participate in the game jam?

Experience is not necessary. Designers, developers, artists, musicians, knitters, gardeners, architects and anyone is welcome to try their hand at making a game during the Texas Game Jam. You can lean many new skills and support your team by contributing ideas, playtesting, and giving moral support.

How many members can be on a team?

We have no limit on teams! Though we do recommend teams to be around 5-6 people for ease of communication.
